Brittany Ferries are to lay up the 'Normandie Express' after severe damage was caused to one of its main engines. The fastcraft will be out of service until the 20th May 2010.
The ship had to sail at reduced speed of 26 knots (compared to her usual 40 knots) during the Easter holidays and carried out all of its rotations to and from Cherbourg, with the three Ouistreham rotations on the weekend diverted accordingly.
This service can not be ensured by a conventional vessel for such replacement would require a period of virtual weapons than the period of technical stop to repair the engine of the "Normandie Express'. A conventional vessel, could not enter service until a few days before the restart of the Normandie Express.
The company has seen fit to keep the service open until the end of last weekend.
In addition, the company contributes to solving the problem related to the closure of airspace and sailed every day of those forced to find a means of transport other than flying. However, given the unpredictability of the duration of the closure of airspace, the company can not challenge its maintenance program in order not to jeopardize its operations during the summer.
