The busiest of all Brittany Ferries routes, the purpose built cruise ferries Normandie and Mont St Michel offer up to 3 return sailings per day with an average crossing time of just under six hours. A fast ferry service was launched during 2005 by the Normandie Express offering weekend sailings (Fri - Sun) linking the two ports in just 3 ¾ hours.
The ferry sails to the port of Ouistreham which is located 15km to the north of the city of Caen, which can be reached by a fast dual carriageway.
Brittany Ferries celebrated 20 years of the Portsmouth - Caen route on the 6th June 2006. The route was opened by the Duc de Normandie back in 1986, where Brittany Ferries were then the only operator out of the newly constructed continental ferry port in Portsmouth. Since then, over 18 million passengers have been carried on the route.
In 2008 1,022,000 passengers travelled between Portsmouth and Caen.
