The Poole/Santander route is a freight only service operated by the mv Cotentin.
The route opened on Friday 30th November 2007, five days after entering service on the Poole/Cherbourg route. The route received €870,877 of finding from the 'Marco Polo programme as the 'Gulf Stream' project. The EU Marco Polo programme's objective is to reduce road congestion and to improve the environmental performance of the freight transport system within the Community and to enhance intermodality, thereby contributing to an efficient and sustainable transport system.
In 2009 Brittany Ferries announced that sailings on its freight-only Poole/Santander service would be doubled to two round-trips per week, with effect from October 2009. In addition to its existing weekend schedule, the mv Cotentin offered a mid-week departure, leaving Poole on a Tuesday morning and returning from Santander on a Wednesday afternoon. This continued until the arrival of the mv Cap Finistere in early 2010, where the route reverted to a being a weekly service.
From March 2011 the mv Cotentin will once again be operating two departures per week, departing Poole on Sunday and Tuesday.
